Learn a little more about my techniques and beliefs.
2- Is massaging children just a case of treating them the same as an adult but gentler?
3- What if my child doesn't want massage when attending a group class or one on one?
4- Can I massage my child or parent that is palliative?
Some therapist believe that massage needs to hurt to work. This is NOT what I believe. Over the many years I’ve practiced massage I have had many clients get relief without pain. I believe that if you warm up the tissue it will respond and loosen up just like moulding dough. This is especially important when working with clients that have been traumatized in the past.
No, treating a child requires varying the treatment in many ways. A child's tissue is thinner and their joints are more fragile. A child's body is continually going through important developmental stages, which is important to understand when giving them massage. Also, many children may have difficulty sitting still for long periods of time, that is why a paediatric massage therapist will often use storytelling massage to engage the child and have them involved in their treatment.
First and foremost I teach that it is necessary to always have permission before giving anyone a massage. For those children I call movers and shakers, who may not want to get a massage when coming to a group class, the point of the massage class is to teach the techniques so that you can try these techniques at home when an infant may be more receptive. I will teach about cues, massage is an excellent way to spend quality time communicating with your child and learning more about their cues. Children may only want a few moments of massage at a time, but over time that can increase.
There are some situations when massage is contraindicated or not safe, so in many of these situations it will be important to ask your doctor if massage is okay, however, if it is contraindicated there can be other things you can do through touch. Touch is very important for someone who is very sick. Whenever you lay your hands onto the surface of the skin there is an increased blood flow which generates heat and healing. For example, if you lay your hands on the tummy of a child that is having difficulty with constipation or experiencing gas you can increase the movement and flow allowing things to pass. I can assist you with techniques that would be safe and gentle.
